MADRID (AP) — Killian Mbappe scored a goal in his second season against Real Madrid, winning Osasuna 1-0 in the Spanish league opening match on Tuesday.
Mbappe, the key scorer in his debut against Madrid last season, changed his 51-minute penalty kick to give the hosts a victory. A great run by Mbappé through the right side of the area, followed by a neatly reduced move, prompting a foul.
The goal gave it New Coach Xabi Alonso His first full season of winning debut with the club. The former Madrid player has replaced Carlo Ancelotti, who arrived before the Club World Cup and left to take on a job in Brazil.
“It was special to be back here as an unforgettable coach,” Alonso said. “Hopefully it was the first of many victories celebrated here.”
Alonso has started three new signings and games for the club of the season. Trent Alexander Arnold Central defender Dean Huizen. Teenage forward Franco Mustantouno came out of the bench on the 68th to replace Brahim Diaz.
Some fans weren’t happy after the former Kawakai player Lionel Messi praises – A fellow Argentina who was a star of rival Barcelona – during his introductory press conference.
The 18-year-old Mustandoono had the opportunity to score on the 89th, but his shot from the area was saved by Osasuna’s goalkeeper.
“They did everything well,” Alonso said of the newcomer. “They’ve been helping us for years. None of them felt the pressure of the Madrid Jersey or the Bernabeu.”
Osasuna defender Abel Breton was sent to stop time with a straight red card for his high arm to block Madrid forward Gonzalo Garcia.
“They were in control, we knew it would be like that,” Osasuna midfielder Ruben Garcia said. “We played a good game, but we couldn’t get too close to their goals. In the end, they deserved a victory.”
Madrid forward Rodrigo stayed on the bench throughout the match, increasing speculation of possible transfers. Alonso has downplayed Rodrigo’s minutes of shortage and says he’s relying on Brazil International for now.
“It was just a match,” he said. “If he hasn’t got these minutes in three months, that’s not true.”
The game was played on Tuesday instead of last weekend as Madrid players needed more rest following their team participation in the Club World Cup. Attempts to further delay Madrid’s debut were rejected by the league.
Madrid, who controlled over 70%, struggled to break through the tight Osasuna defense early and threatened with some long-range shots.
“We started with the results and there were some positive things,” Alonso said. “We still need some things to give us stability that keeps progressing.”
Mbappe with No. 10th jersey this season had one of Madrid’s best chances with curling shots from within the area that just missed the top corner, but he eventually managed to break through the winner early in the second half as Madrid continued to move forward. The goalkeeper jumped in the opposite direction and he sent a low shot from the spot to the right of the net.
“You can say you want more Mbappé,” Alonso said.
