on Football stopped on Molineux on Saturday afternoon for Diogo Jota. The Portuguese forward, who tragically died in a car accident in Spain on July 3rd, along with his brother Andr Silva, was remembered as one of the most powerful tributes wolf fans have ever performed.

The giant flag draped on South Bank paid tribute to Jota, as his widow Rute Cardoso and his family had seen. Married just 11 days before the tragedy, Cardoso stood with his in-laws and close friends as the stadium held collectively.

Beautiful tribute to Preston and Liverpool’s Diogo Jota and his brothers

The match itself mostly faded into the background. This was the wolf’s first home game since Jota’s death, and the club confirmed that the moment was his. His face covered the front of the matchday program. Players lined up the centre circle for a one-minute applause. All the stands’ supporters rose in unison, and even after the referee whip, they clapped.

Then, in the 18th minute, Molineux rose again. It was the number of Jotas in his wolf era, and for 60 seconds the noise tumbled like thunder. It wasn’t just applause – it was appreciation. Goalkeeper Joss visibly choked, and former captain Ruben Neves placed his arm around Cardoso, wiping tears.

The words of TIFO under the main banner read, “I remember you as I walked through the fields of gold.” Gold Jota’s reference to the field of favourite song is in a deeper and more heart-warming moment.

From championship gambling to Premier League heroes, Jota’s story still runs through Wolverhampton.

Jota’s connection with the wolf ran deeper than the finish line. He arrived on loan from Atltico Madrid in 2017 and gave up Champions League football for a shot in the second tier of England. Gambling paid off with epicity. His first season, 18 goals, promotion and legacy as one of the club’s modern greats.

By the time Liverpool paid him $52 million in 2020, Jota had fired the wolf into Europe, scoring 44 goals in 131 matches, creating a lightning Europa League hat-trick moment against Baketa. Fans didn’t just praise him – they adored him.

Elsewhere, in honor at Anfield on Friday night, Liverpool supporters unveiled a mosaic in his honor during a 4-2 victory at Bournemouth. Mohamed Salah scored late, celebrated with Jota’s trademark “Crocodile” gesture, and shed tears in the final whis. “We felt emotion, sadness,” Liverpool boss Arne Slott admitted after the match. “Mo probably felt them the most.”

Throughout the Premier League, players wore black armbands and the stadium observed Jota’s silence. The wolf confirmed that many of the flower tributes left outside of Molineux would be displayed forever at the club’s museum, ensuring that his memory would remain part of the city’s fabric.

For Rute Cardoso, Saturday was an afternoon of heartbreak and pride pride for the wolves, Liverpool and the man who gave it all to the game itself. It reminded me that for everyone else in Molineux, soccer is more than a goal or a trophy. It’s about people who leave us early but never leave us at all.
