Jeff Bezos may be approaching one of the biggest investments of his sports career. The Guardian reports that the Amazon founder has discussed joining a consortium seeking to acquire a 30% stake in Liverpool FC, one of England’s most successful and valuable football clubs.
The bid was led by former Queens Park Rangers co-owner Amit Bhatia, who reportedly submitted a preliminary offer of £1.35 billion (about $1.8 billion) to buy a minority stake from Liverpool’s current owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG).

If the deal goes through, Liverpool would be worth around $6 billion, making it one of the most valuable sports franchises in the world and significantly higher than what Sir Jim Ratcliffe was valued at when he bought a nearly 30% stake in Manchester United in 2024.
Fenway Sports Group expresses interest
An FSG spokesperson confirmed that the Bhatia-led consortium had expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool. However, the organization declined to confirm whether Jeff Bezos is officially involved with the group.
Amazon also declined to comment on the report.
Jeff Bezos turns his attention to soccer
This isn’t the first time Bezos has explored sports ownership. In recent years, he evaluated potential bids from the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders, but never closed on a deal.
Now the billionaire is reportedly targeting the Premier League for the first time. The Premier League is widely known as the world’s most lucrative and globally watched soccer competition.
The move also reflects a growing trend among billionaire investors. Celebrities like Steve Ballmer (Los Angeles Clippers), Rob Walton (Denver Broncos), and Bernard Arnault (Paris FC) have all invested heavily in professional sports franchises.
Battia prepares to bid for Liverpool
As part of that process, Amit Bhatia this week resigned as director and co-owner of Queens Park Rangers, transferring his shareholding to Ruben Nanalingam and focusing on Liverpool’s bid.
Mr. Bhatia is also reportedly backed by his father-in-law, Lakshmi Mittal, an Indian steel tycoon whose fortune is estimated at more than $30 billion.
It is worth noting that Fenway Sports Group has already sold a 3% stake in Liverpool to private equity firm Dynasty Equity in 2023. So it’s not unheard of for Anfield clubs to bring in outside investors.
