EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Spain celebrates after defeating Argentina world cup finals Things turned ugly after the final whistle as players briefly clashed on the field.
Video replays showed several players involved in the scuffle, including Argentina defender Leandro Paredes, who appeared to shove Spain’s Eric Garcia in the throat. Spain substitute Gabi jumped in to intervene and Paredes pushed him to the ground.
Other players and Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni also rushed in to try to bring the situation under control.
It is unclear whether the players involved will be punished. FIFA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Spain needed extra time to win Sunday final 1-0 Enzo Fernandes was sent off for a second yellow card, reducing Argentina to 10 men.
When Spain lifted the trophy, Argentina’s players stood with their backs to the podium, facing the fans.
