Manchester United made their first major announcement of the summer transfer window, announcing the signing of Brazilian midfielder Andrei Santos from Chelsea in a deal worth up to $67.09 million.
The 22-year-old arrives at Old Trafford as the first permanent signing under new head coach Michael Carrick, marking the start of what the club hopes will be a long-term rebuild around a younger, more dynamic midfield.

With Casemiro expected to leave and Manuel Ugarte sidelined due to a serious knee injury sustained during the World Cup, United have made midfield a top priority. Santos is currently the first part of a major renovation of the center of the park.
Details of the transfer
Manchester United will pay Chelsea $64.4 million in guarantees, with an additional $2.68 million in performance-related bonuses. Chelsea also negotiated a 10 per cent sell-on clause that would allow the Blues to benefit financially if Santos were to move again later in his career. The move brings Santos, who joined from Brazilian club Vasco da Gama in 2023, to the end of his three-year contract with Chelsea.
His time at Stamford Bridge included loan spells with Nottingham Forest and Strasbourg in France, but Santos emerged as a key contributor in the 2025-26 season, making 43 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and providing four assists.
Despite these performances, regular playing time became increasingly uncertain. Chelsea’s absence from European competition has reduced his available minutes, while Moises Caicedo’s long-term contract extension has further complicated Santos’ path to becoming a full-time starter. This opened the door for United to take action.
Why Manchester United wanted Santos
United’s interests go far beyond meeting immediate needs. Club officials view Santos as one of the most talented young midfielders in world football and believe he has the versatility needed to thrive in the Premier League. Primarily a defensive midfielder, Santos is equally used to breaking down opposition attacks, advancing the ball into midfield, and operating in more advanced positions when necessary.
These qualities fit the profile United have prioritized throughout the summer. Recruitment director Christopher Vibel is already well acquainted with the Brazilian after helping bring him to Chelsea in 2023, giving the club confidence not only in his footballing ability, but also in his personality and professionalism.
Those within United believe Santos will integrate seamlessly into the dressing room and develop into one of the team’s leaders over the next few years. One of the biggest factors behind this move may have been the opportunity to work for Michael Carrick.
Few midfielders in Premier League history are more respected for their positional intelligence than the former Manchester United star, but Santos admits the opportunity to learn from him played a big role in his decision. Santos said after the transfer was completed: “Everything about Manchester United is special. It’s an incredible feeling to be joining the club that some of my biggest idols have represented.”
