Lacey Santos and Trinity Rodman scored and the Washington Spirit won their third straight game, 2-0, over North Carolina Courage on Saturday night.
In the only other game in the National Women’s Soccer League, Angel City defeated the San Diego Wave 2-0.
Santos scored in the 37th minute, receiving a cross from Kate Wiesner inside the box and volleying it into the net.
The Spirit (8-3-2) took a 2-0 lead in first-half stoppage time when Rodman scored on a long-range shot from Tara Ladd.
Plucky forward Ashley Sanchez appeared to halve the lead with a free-kick goal in the 50th minute, but the goal was ruled out after a video review. MF Shinomi Koyama was judged to have entered within 1 yard of the Spirit Wall.
Spirit goaltender Sandy McIver made one save, earning his sixth clean sheet of the season.
The home loss in Cary ended North Carolina State (6-4-3)’s winning streak at four.
Angel City leads the wave in Southern California rivalry match
Maiara Niues scored in her fourth straight game and Allie Borges added a goal as Angel City (6-1, 6-0) defeated the league-leading Wave at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego.
Goalkeeper Luisa Agudelo was unable to contain the ball, but Niewes beat defender Perle Moroni and headed the ball home for a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute.
In the 26th minute, Svejndis Jónsdóttir made a long throw into the box, but Borges pushed it in to make it 2-0.
Angel City attacker Jun Endo went down with a non-contact injury in the 33rd minute and left the pitch with an assist, visibly shaken.
In the 86th minute, Borges beat midfielder Kimi Ascanio in the box to give the Wave (9-5-1) a penalty, but Leah Godfrey’s spot shot hit the post.
Angelina Anderson made six saves for her fourth shutout of the season.
San Diego’s shutout streak ended at 242 minutes.
