DENVER (AP) – Former Manchester City women’s coach Nick Cushing has been named the expansion head coach of the Denver Summit in the National Women’s Football League.

The summit, which took part in the league next season, announced its moves on Wednesday.

“Our teams play offensive games that excite the stadium and make things difficult for their opponents. We want to gain a great experience in everything in Colorado,” Cushing said in a statement.

Cushing took over as interim coach at Manchester City in March after Gareth Taylor was fired. He previously served as the club’s head coach from 2013 to 2020, winning the Women’s Super League title in 2016 and the FA Cup in 2017.

Cushing, a native of Chester, England, was also a former coach at the men’s major league soccer club New York City FC from 2022 to 24.

“To be successful immediately, we need people who have experienced this environment, built an organization and have succeeded,” said Kurt Johnson, general manager of the summit. “Nick brings a world-class experience, a passion for player development and a tactical vision that excites Summit Supporters. He has won major trophies and is the right leader to lead us into our first season and beyond.”

Last month, the Denver team announced its name, crest and branding as it is rising towards its first season. The Summit and Expansion Boston Legacy will lead the league to 16 teams.

Denver was awarded the franchise last December. The team will play at the temporary home for two seasons before moving to a new 14,500-seat dedicated stadium in 2028. The club also broke the ground at Centennial’s training centre.
