GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) – Celtic signed Martin O’Neill on a one-year contract on Thursday after the 74-year-old manager led the Glasgow giants to a Scottish league and cup double in the recently concluded season.
O’Neill had two interim spells as coach during last season, the second of which ended in a seven-game winning streak in the Scottish Premiership. Celtic steal the trophy The long-running title race has seen it slip away from Hearts’ grasp.
A week later Celtic won the Scottish Cup final by defeating Dunfermline.
O’Neill was credited with reinvigorating Celtic twice during a turbulent season and was penned on a 12-month contract with an option for a further year.
The Northern Irishman also managed Celtic from 2000 to 2005, leading them to three league titles, three Scottish Cup titles and a domestic treble in 2001.
O’Neill said: “Last season will live on in our memories for a long time and being a part of its success has really fueled our desire to do more days like that and bring those moments to our supporters.”
