Breaking up is never easy. Josep Guardiola left a special message for Manchester City fans during an emotional farewell at the Etihad Stadium following the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.

At his farewell, there were tributes, tears and applause for the 55-year-old coach, but in his speech he made an unusual request to each “nation” in attendance.

Josep Guardiola’s unexpected request

The Catalan manager, who ended a historic era in charge of the Citizens after 10 seasons, said the love of the fans was something he needed even after he left the club.

In his final game as City manager, Guardiola took to the microphone and addressed the fans in an emotional speech. So, while the Spaniard thanked him for the support over a decade that saw him win 20 titles and turn the club into a European football powerhouse, he decided to put winning aside and focus on other aspects.

“It was a huge honor to be your manager, to be here for 10 years. The amount of trophies, the incredible emotions. Please, I hope that we can not only remember the trophies, but through our incredible players, give the people who come here the feeling that maybe we could enjoy,” Pep said.

During his speech, Guardiola also took the opportunity to make a heartfelt and special wish to the fans who have supported him over the years, making it clear that he needs all their love.

“In the next few years, if you find me anywhere in the world, here in Europe, in America too, on the streets, if you’re a Man City fan, come up to me and give me a hug! I need that.”

The Spaniard had one year left on his contract with Manchester City, but decided to leave before it expired.

Guardiola won more trophies in 10 years during his tenure than the club had won in its previous 136-year history. He left an indelible mark on Manchester City’s history, winning the Premier League six times, the Champions League once, the FA Cup three times, the Carabao Cup five times, the Community Shields three times, the UEFA Super Cup once and the FIFA Club World Cup once.

“It’s a great honor to represent this club. Every time I made 10 million decisions with 10 million mistakes, I always thought about what was best for this club and always will. I love you so much! It was so much fun!” he added.

Beyond titles and records, Guardiola left behind an identity that changed Manchester City’s history forever. His bond with the fans went beyond the game itself and was reflected in his heartfelt request for a farewell, a farewell filled with emotion, gratitude and mutual appreciation.
