Xabi Alonso’s move to Chelsea has already begun to reshape expectations around the club’s transfer strategy even before he officially takes over.
The former Real Madrid manager is set to take over as Stamford Bridge manager on a four-year deal from July 1 and is thought to be closely involved in early recruitment plans.

Among the names being discussed, one that stands out is Real Madrid midfielder Arda Guler. He is reportedly still in regular contact with Alonso and remains a long-term target for Chelsea’s new manager.
Alonso’s short but influential spell at Real Madrid helped him develop a strong professional relationship with Guler.
The Turkish international initially struggled to get consistent playing time under his former manager, but things improved significantly upon Alonso’s arrival. Under his guidance, Guler was given greater trust and responsibility in the game.
This change made him a more influential figure within the team and strengthened his bond with the Spanish coach. Now, even after Alonso’s departure, that connection appears to remain intact through continued private communication.
Chelsea’s leaders are aware that Alonso’s personal relationship could play a big role in his recruitment decision. According to reports, he has already identified players who can lift the team, and Guler is expected to be high on that list.
The idea of a reunion at Stamford Bridge is said to be attractive to Alonso, especially considering the midfielder’s technical profile and long-term potential.
Alonso’s vision and growing Güler transfer talk
During his time at Madrid, Alonso helped Güler transform from a team player to a more stable presence in the team.
The youngster had limited appearances in his first two seasons, but his appearances increased significantly under manager Alonso, who reportedly praised his creativity and tactical intelligence.
Despite dealing with injury setbacks, Guler still managed a productive season, showing glimpses of the ability that has made him one of the most highly rated young midfielders in Europe.
While working under Alonso, he racked up significant minutes, contributing goals and assists while adapting to a more structured role.
Güler himself speaks warmly of his former manager, describing their relationship as close and based on trust.
“The truth is, our relationship was great. It felt like he handed me the keys,” Güler told Turkish outlet TRT Spor.
“Honestly, it was exactly what I was looking for. Now he has signed for Chelsea. I hope everything goes well for him. Of course we still send messages to each other.”
However, a potential move to Chelsea is by no means easy. Guler is under contract with Real Madrid until 2029, meaning the Spanish giants will have full control over his future.
He is thought to be valued at around 90 million euros, but Madrid are likely to demand more than 100 million euros just to consider selling him. Chelsea will also face competition from other top European clubs to monitor his progress.
Although a transfer is not imminent, the relationship between the two sides could become decisive if Chelsea decide to make a serious move in the future.
