LISBON, PORTUGAL (AP) — Portugal Forward Rafael Leão was sent off for punching an opponent during Saturday’s 2-0 win over Chile in a World Cup pre-game.
Leon got into a heated argument with Chilean defender Ivan Roman after he felt he had been fouled by another opponent. Leon was seen throwing a punch, with Roman reacting angrily, and both were shown straight red cards just before half-time.
Cristiano Ronaldo He started, but was sent off at half-time, allowing substitute Gonzalo Guedes to score the opening goal.
Bruno Fernandes extended Portugal’s lead to two points in the 75th minute, while Lucas Cepeda scored in stoppage time for Chile.
Portugal is in Group K at the World Cup along with Colombia, Uzbekistan and Congo. Portugal open against Congo in Houston on June 17th.
Ronaldo is aiming for a record-tying sixth World Cup appearance.
