LONDON (AP) – Chelsea great Bobby Tambling, who held the English club’s all-time goalscoring record for decades, has died. He was 84 years old.
Tambling’s death was confirmed by Chelsea on Thursday, but no further details were given, but Ireland’s soccer He was the manager of Crosshaven Club.
Chelsea described Tambling as “one of our most legendary players” and said: “His name looms large in our history.”
He played 370 games for Chelsea from 1959 to 1970, scoring 202 goals, and was the team’s record goalscorer until 2013. frank lampard exceeded the tally.
Tambling made his debut for Chelsea in 1959 at the age of 17 and was part of the 1965 League Cup winning team, scoring in the final against Leicester.
His five goals in a single match against Aston Villa in 1966 remains a Chelsea record. He also played for Crystal Palace and won three caps for England.
After settling in Cork, Ireland, Tambling managed Cork Celtic, Cork City and Crosshaven. The British Press Association said Mr Tambling had recently been diagnosed with dementia.
“Crosshaven AFC is very sad to announce the passing of our dear friend and former manager, Bobby Tambling. A true Chelsea legend and an even greater human being,” the team said in a statement. Post to X.
