Davis, who joined the team on Sunday, said: “I’m happy to be back on the pitch and running. I’m happy to be home and happy to be with the players and support them on and off the pitch.”
Davis, who has 15 goals in 58 games for Canada, was named to the 26-man squad for the World Cup on Friday. He never second-guessed when he would be able to play. Canada opens the World Cup on June 12th in Toronto against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“We’ll have to see how everything goes over the next few days,” Davis said. “I’m just going to continue rehabbing, continuing to progress and seeing how I feel, day by day, one step at a time.”
Davis has not played for Canada since March 2025, when he tore his ACL in the CONCACAF Nations League final.
“It’s been tough. The last year has obviously been an up and down time for me because I had my ACL happen and some muscle injuries here and there. But at the end of the day, I think I just have to keep my head down and keep working. I can’t let that affect me,” he said. “Obviously it was tough both mentally and physically, but I feel good now and hope to recover as soon as possible.”
Canada coach Jesse Marsh said Davies shouldn’t feel pressured to return too soon.
“What we don’t want is to put him in a situation where he’s suffering again and vulnerable again. You can imagine he wants to be fit and trust his body in every way so he can go out and play football and do what he loves,” Marsh said. “So we’re going to do a good job as a staff of keeping a close eye on him every day, monitoring him every day and putting him in a position to be successful, and I’m confident we will.”
