BARCELONA, Spain (AP) – Spain midfielder Fermin López is expected to miss the World Cup because of a broken bone in his right foot.
Barcelona announced on Monday that López, 23, would need surgery to treat an injury sustained in Sunday’s Spanish league match.
The club announced, “Lopez fractured the fifth metatarsal of his right foot during the match against Betis.The player will undergo surgery.”
Barcelona have not announced how long López will recover, but he is not expected to be ready for next month’s World Cup. Spain will make his debut on June 15th against Cape Verde in Atlanta.
López was part of the Spanish national team that won the 2024 European Championships, as well as the U-23 team that won gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He scored six goals at the Olympics, including two in the final against host France.
