WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) – Former Canadian women’s soccer coach Bev Priestman has had immediate success since returning from a one-year suspension for her role in the drone spying scandal at the 2024 Olympics, leading the Wellington Phoenix women to the Australian A-League final.
The Phoenix lost 3-1 to Melbourne Victory in Saturday’s final, but it was a significant improvement compared to the team’s previous four A-League seasons. They finished last in the 11-team league their first two seasons and eighth and ninth the following two seasons.

Priestman found a chance for redemption far from home in New Zealand, where he was offered the chance to return to a coaching role on a two-year contract. At her first press conference in New Zealand, she thanked Phoenix for “believing in me to return to the game”.
“For me, coming back felt like the right choice. Today is a good day.”
After the final, Priestman said he enjoyed his first season back in soccer.
“I’ve seen people do their best when they’re hungry,” she says. Losing in the final “left us with a little bit of responsibility. And in many ways, it could help us go to another level next year. I have an ambitious club.
“I’m at my best at this moment. Hunger, desire to move forward. I think everyone will show that right now. Come preseason, you’ll see what was going on.”
