When Curacao makes its World Cup debut against Germany in Houston on June 14, Advocaat will be seven years older than Otto Rehhagel, 71, who coached Greece at the 2010 World Cup.
It will also be Advocaat’s third World Cup with three different teams: his native Netherlands in 1994 and South Korea in 2006.
Curaçao will also face Ecuador in Kansas City and Ivory Coast in Philadelphia in the inaugural 48-team World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The extended format adds three additional warranty entries to the CONCACAF area.
Advocaat led the small Caribbean island team through to qualifying and was replaced by compatriot Rutten in February.
Coach Rutten suffered two losses in warm-up games against Australia and China in March, and was reportedly unpopular with the players who wanted Advocaat to return.
Curaçao is an autonomous territory of approximately 156,000 people within the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Caribbean Sea. The team relies almost entirely on players born and raised in the Netherlands.
