VILLAREA, Spain (AP) – Villarreal will look for a new manager when they play back-to-back Champions League games for the first time after confirming Marcelino will leave at the end of the season.
Marcelino’s second spell as Villarreal manager begins in 2023, with the team currently in third place in La Liga with four games in hand, having had their best season ever and on track for their best finish in 18 years. This is the second consecutive year the club has qualified for the Champions League.
Villarreal announced on Monday that the club and Marcelino would “part ways at the end of this season” without giving a reason. Where he will go next remains unclear.
“Thank you very much, Marce. Thank you for everything you have given this club and our supporters. We wish you the best of luck in your future sporting projects.”
Villarreal added that Marcelino, who managed a club-record 298 games, will step down at the end of the league season.
