BERLIN (AP) — St. Pauli moved closer to the Bundesliga relegation zone with a 2-1 home loss to Mainz, but Wolfsburg was hoping to advance later Sunday.
Philipp Teets and Philippe Mwene scored goals in the first half for Mainz, ensuring they remain in the same division next season without fear of relegation. When Urs Fischer took over as manager in December, Mainz were at the bottom of the table with 13 wins and 9 losses.
Wolfsburg then faced Freiburg, and if they avoided defeat they could move ahead of St. Pauli and advance into the relegation play-offs.
The bottom two teams will be automatically relegated, and the team that finishes third from the bottom will play a two-leg playoff against the third-place team from the second division to determine who will participate in next season’s Bundesliga.
Also on Sunday, Borussia Mönchengladbach secured a 1-0 win over second-placed Borussia Dortmund thanks to a late goal from Haris Tabakovic.
There are only two rounds left after this weekend.
Bayern Munich has already won the title 4 rounds left. schalke Confirm promotion I will return to the department on Saturday.
