LEEDS, England (AP) — Leeds United took a big step towards establishing themselves in the Premier League after a comfortable 3-1 win over Burnley on Friday.
This victory almost guarantees top-flight football at Elland Road next season. Leeds are nine points ahead of Tottenham Hotspur, who sit in third and last place in the relegation zone.
Daniel Farke’s side have moved into 14th place, ahead of Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and West Ham, who all have games in hand. The bottom two teams, Wolves and Burnley, have already fallen down the table.
Anton Stacchi put the home team ahead in the eighth minute with a low shot from 30 meters that somehow slipped inside Martin Dubravka’s post.
The second goal came seven minutes into the second half thanks to sloppy defending from Burnley’s Bashir Humphries. His pass was intercepted by Dominic Calvert-Lewin, whose brilliant backheel created space in the Burnley defense and allowed Noah Okafor to shoot.
Calvert-Lewin scored his third goal four minutes later, as Dubravka tried to slot home in a crowded penalty box after Dubravka could only parry Ao Tanaka’s long-range shot.
Rum Chauna scored the winning goal for Burnley.
