“Do you think a defibrillator is a traditional fifth season gift? It makes sense for this show,” says Hollywood celebrity Ryan Reynolds. co-owner The club wrote in X in tribute to the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ series, which chronicled the team’s unprecedented journey up the league pyramid in English football.

However, the last step is the biggest step.

On Saturday, Wrexham will play the final round of the regular season in the Second Division Championship, aiming to qualify for the play-offs that will decide the final promotion spot to the Premier League.

The top two teams will automatically advance through the standings, with one team being Coventry who will finish in first place. Teams from 3rd to 6th place advance to the playoffs. Wrexham are sixth in the table with one game remaining.

The last spot in the play-offs is a three-way battle between Wrexham, Hull (seventh behind Wrexham on goal difference) and Derby (eighth, one point behind).

Wrexham’s toughest game will be at home to fourth-placed Middlesbrough, but they need a win to have any chance of finishing second.

Hull host 9th placed Norwich, while Derby host 15th placed Sheffield United.

Wrexham have already secured their highest finish in their 162-year history – their previous best finish was 15th in the Second Division in 1978-79 – but there is still a chance of a fourth successive promotion beyond the owners’ wildest dreams.

3rd consecutive promotion This had never been done before in British football. So Wrexham, who have seen impressive growth and been talked about by many since being acquired by Reynolds and Rob Mack (ex-McElhenny) in 2021, are well ahead of schedule.

Wrexham midfielder Ollie Rathbone said: “Everyone would have thought of this scenario at the start of the season.”

All 12 games in the final round of the Championship will kick off at the same time.

It’s also a big, if not decisive, round in the Premier League for both the title race and the battle to avoid relegation.

Arsenal, aiming to become English champions for the first time since 2004, lead second-place Manchester City by three points with a game remaining. Arsenal host Fulham on Saturday, while City visit Everton on Monday night.

At the other end of the table, third-to-last Tottenham – the team in the top flight since 1978 – are in the relegation zone with four games in hand. The next match will be played at Aston Villa on Sunday. Tottenham are two points behind West Ham, who visit Brentford on Saturday, and five points behind Nottingham Forest, who visit Chelsea on Monday.

Manchester United’s home game against rivals Liverpool on Sunday is also worth watching. They sit in third and fourth place respectively and are both aiming to qualify for the Champions League.

Activity suspended

Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah will leave the club at the end of the season after nine years at the club, but it remains to be seen how long he will be sidelined after sustaining a hamstring injury last weekend.

Man City hope Rodri can return from the muscular injury that has kept him out of the team’s last two games.
