MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid defender Eder Militao underwent surgery Tuesday to correct a hamstring problem that is expected to prevent him from playing at the World Cup.
According to Spanish media reports, recovery from this type of surgery can take at least several months. Brazil will make its World Cup debut on June 14 in less than seven weeks.
Militao was injured Madrid beat Alaves 2-1 Last week in La Liga.
Madrid announced that the central defender underwent successful surgery for a “ruptured proximal biceps femoris tendon in his left leg.”
Madrid did not say when the player would return, but added: “Militão will begin his recovery efforts in the coming days.”
The 28-year-old Brazil international has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, including serious knee problems.
