MONTREAL (AP) – Prince Owusu scored an early goal and Thomas Gillier stood up for CF Montreal on Saturday with a 1-0 victory over New York City FC, extending the club’s winning streak to six.
Montreal (3-6-0) took the lead in the 18th minute. Owusu used an assist. Matty Longstaff and defender Luca Petrasso scored for the sixth time this season. It was the first assist of the season for Longstaff and Petrasso. Owusu has 28 goals in 80 career games.
Gillier totaled two saves in his 17th career start for Montreal. The 21-year-old’s shutouts came in eight starts this season.
Maxi Morales had a chance to score in the first two minutes of the second half, but his open shot from 12 yards out missed to the left for New York City FC (3-4-3), which fell to 0-4-2 in its last six games.
Tyvon Gray received two yellow cards in two minutes, leaving NYCFC with one man down in the 78th minute.
NYCFC’s Thales Magno had a chance to equalize in the 80th minute, firing an open shot from 12 yards straight into Gilier’s hands.
Matt Freese made four saves for NYCFC. Freese made three saves and Gilier made one save in the first half.
Montreal beat the visiting New York Red Bulls 4-1, winning both games since Philippe Ulafroy replaced Marco Donadel as interim manager.
Montreal improved to 2-1-0 at home, but NYCFC fell to 1-2-1 on the road.
Montreal defeated NYCFC twice last season by a score of 1-0.
