a A new era begins at Inter Miami following the departure of Javier Mascherano. New Herons manager Guillermo Hoyos surprised everyone at his inaugural press conference, ranking the club as the best team in the world, in his first press conference since taking over.
The Argentine coach highlighted the club’s rapid growth and the influence it has had on international football in recent years, which has propelled it to the top.
Hoyos has no doubts about Inter Miami
In his first public statement, the manager made clear his ambitious vision for the Florida-based team’s current status and emphasized that the opening of Inter Miami’s new stadium, the New Stadium, has elevated the club’s standing.
Today, I think Inter is one of the top 10 teams, not just in MLS, but in the world. On top of that, the opening of the stadium is something special. It’s very well known.
Backing up his statement, Hoyos offered a vision for the future rather than an assessment of the team’s current state. Despite recently winning the Eastern Conference title and also winning the MLS Cup, the team has already been eliminated in the first round of the 2026 CONCACAF Champions League, dropping four spots in the CONCACAF Club Rankings (from 3rd to 7th).
In MLS, Inter Miami is in third place in the Eastern Conference with 12 points after seven games after two consecutive draws at the new stadium, but the team is yet to win since the season opener. As a result, they are one point behind the Chicago Fire and four points behind leader Nashville (16th place).
The manager, who has previously worked within the club’s sporting organization, will initially serve as interim head coach, but did not rule out continuing in the role if the board decides to continue. “We will do whatever they want,” added the Argentine coach.
Meanwhile, Hoyos has already led his first training session as the new head coach and the team is focused on the next matches.
This Saturday, April 18th, they will take on the Colorado Rapids in Round 8 of Major League Soccer at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver, marking Hoyos’ first game at the helm.
They will then travel to Real Salt Lake’s home stadium, America First Field, on Wednesday, April 22nd for another MLS match, before closing out April at New Stadium on Saturday, April 25th, against New England looking for their first home win.
