Coventry City are all but officially promoted to the Premier League after Middlesbrough lost at home to Portsmouth this afternoon. Frank Lampard’s side had to settle for a frustrating goalless stalemate in one of the Championship’s lunchtime fixtures against relegated Sheffield Wednesday at the CBS Arena.
It came after Friday night saw Millwall drop points with a draw with West Brom. The Lions were unable to collect all three points, leaving them in 3rd place with 73 points, while Boro lost 1-0 at home to Riverside, leaving them in 4th place with 72 points. Millwall can pick up a maximum of 85 points with four games remaining, while Boro can only reach 84 points. City had 85 points against the Owls, with a goal difference of over 42. This puts them 22 points ahead of Boro and a staggering 33 points ahead of Millwall. Lampard’s side are virtually guaranteed a top-two finish and a place in the Premier League as a result.
More than 7,000 Sky Blue Army supporters will be heading to Ewood Park for Friday night’s game, which will see them officially secure promotion if they win just one more point against Blackburn Rovers.
Home or away is of little concern to Lampard, who said: “I’m often asked if it’s better to play at home, win away or if I get a different result on the way home on the M40 and win.”
“But I’m not concerned about how we win. In fact, my only Premier League wins were at Stamford Bridge and away at Bolton, and away at Bolton was the best. So we’ll see.”
Coventry’s next target will be a bid to win their first title since 2020, when they won League One. The last time he won the Nidan title was in 1967.
