In2021, actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney decided to invest in the UK football team by purchasing Welsh’s team Welshham AFC.

Despite their lack of knowledge, Reynolds and McElhenny achieved something that seemed unthinkable, bringing the team from England’s fifth division to second division over three years.

Since taking over the team, the two Hollywood actors have invested heavily both on and off the field.

Thanks to this investment, Wrexham has achieved three consecutive promotions, moving from the state-owned organization (5th division) to the championship (second).

Many titles are subject to great losses

According to Sportbible.com, football finance expert Kieran Maguire previously revealed how much money Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have lost since taking over the Welsh club.

In February 2021, the Hollywood duo completed a contract to buy the then National League club, and since taking over the club, they have invested in on-field and off-field issues.

Wrexham’s Commercial Growth

Thanks to the huge success of the documentary “Welcome to Wrexham,” the club has signed important deals with brands such as United Airlines, Tiktok and Reynolds Air Gin.

This has quadrupled revenues from 2.5 million ($3.3 million) in 2019 to 10.5 million (nearly $14 million) in 2023.

In addition, large revenues are generated not only from television advertising, but also from tickets and products sales.

But nonetheless, Maguire estimates that Reynolds and McElhenney have lost up to $26.6 million as a result of their involvement with Wrexham.

Maguire said about the price of the football podcast: “Regarding losses, Reynolds and McElhenney acquired the club in November 2020. From that season onwards in 2023, in two and a half years, they lost all the benefits of globalizing the brand and having an international sponsor.

“When it comes to investing in clubs, I think we can probably double that number, so you’re probably looking at between 18M and 20M ($24M to $26.6M) as a general estimate.

“I think in the National League you averaged 3,000 ($4,000) a week. In fact, some famous players were at least twice as high, and it was unprecedented when it came to paying the National League.”

“When I talk to people in League 1 and League 2, players dropped down two divisions and signed Wrexham, which is a professional career.
