NEWCASTLE, England (AP) — A man has been arrested. Reporting discriminatory abuse Police said on Wednesday that he was in the crowd during a match between Premier League rivals Newcastle and Sunderland.
Northumbria Police announced on Tuesday that a 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated breach of peace and subsequently released on bail pending further enquiries, the British Press Association reported.
The match at St James’ Park on March 22 was called off in the second half in line with the Premier League’s anti-discrimination regulations following reports of abuse of black Sunderland player Lutcharel Guiatruida.
Newcastle said in a post-match statement that the club was aware of reports of racism committed by a visiting player towards someone in the crowd.
Sunderland manager praised Guia Truida, saying he “showed courage and leadership by reporting this incident to the match officials”.
Sunderland won the match 2-1.
