COLOGNE, Germany (AP) – Cologne fired coach Lukas Kwasniok on Sunday, with the team on the edge of the Bundesliga relegation zone after a seven-game winless streak.
Cologne made this known in a statement on Saturday. 3-3 draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach The line derby was the last straw for Kwasnik and assistant Frank Caspari. The club announced that former assistant coach René Wagner will serve as interim manager for the remaining seven games of the season.
Managing director Thomas Kessler said: “We simply haven’t won enough points. That’s the reality. Against this background, and after a thorough analysis, we have decided to release Lucas.”
Kwasniuk joined promoted side Cologne from Paderborn last summer and had a contract until 2028. Although his team lost to Bayern Munich in the German Cup, they now have 26 points from 27 Bundesliga games, two points above relegation play-off place St. Pauli after the derby draw.
“We will do everything we can to ensure that we remain in the Bundesliga,” Wagner said.
