NEWCASTLE, England (AP) – The Premier League match between Newcastle and Sunderland was called off on Sunday after reports of discriminatory abuse from spectators, the league announced.
Sunderland’s black player Lutcharel Guiatruida was the target of abuse that resulted in play being suspended late in the game at St James’s Park.
The league said the suspension was in line with its anti-discrimination protocols. It added that an investigation would be launched.
“Racism has no place in our game or in our society. We will continue to work with stakeholders and authorities to ensure our stadiums are inclusive and welcoming environments for all,” the league said in a statement.
Newcastle also said it would conduct an investigation to “identify all individuals and hold them accountable”.
“Our position is clear: we do not tolerate discrimination in any form.”
There were tense scenes between fans outside the stadium before the local derby kick-off, and footage of the footage was widely shared online. However, Northumbria Police announced that only one person had been arrested before the match.
Sunderland won 2-1 with a late goal from Brian Brobbey.
