On Sunday, Declan Rice’s performance made headlines as Arsenal FC defeated Chelsea FC 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium, regaining a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

Declan Rice mocks Chelsea fans after assisting Arsenal’s winner

With the score tied and tensions high in the 66th minute, Rice walked up to take a corner kick in front of a section packed with Chelsea supporters. As he put the ball down, several Blues fans shouted at him, some making clearly obscene gestures.

The England player did not react. Instead, he delivered a corner kick that was driven into the center of the penalty area. This was scored by unmarked Julian Timber with a powerful header, putting Arsenal back in the lead for good. It was a moment that captured Rice’s composure under pressure. Rather than engaging with the crowd, he produced a crucial assist in the match, underscoring once again Arsenal’s dominance from set-pieces.

A dirty victory

The match itself was close from the beginning. Arsenal took the lead in the 21st minute when William Saliba scored his first league goal of the season from a corner kick from Bukayo Saka that caused chaos in the box. Chelsea went into the break level at 1-1 just before half-time when Reece James’ corner corner led to Piero Hincapie’s own goal.

Chelsea made a bright start to the second half, forcing goalkeeper David Raya to make a number of saves. However, Arsenal’s ability to deal with dead balls proved decisive. Rice’s shot from a corner onto Timber marked the club’s 16th goal from a corner in the Premier League this season, equaling the all-time single-season record with nine games remaining.

With 20 minutes remaining, Pedro Neto was shown a red card, and the game shifted further in Arsenal’s favor. However, even with the man advantage, Arsenal needed strong defense and Raya’s key stop to secure the victory.

Arsenal overwhelm Chelsea in league match

Second-half performances from Moises Caicedo and Alejandro Garnacho threatened to spoil the afternoon, but the Spanish goalkeeper made two crucial saves to maintain the lead. Chelsea’s late goal was disallowed for offside, extending Arsenal’s unbeaten run against the Blues in the league to 11 games.

Rice’s reaction to the crowd added even more intensity to the already heated London rivalry. His assist was not only technically astute, but also symbolically important, reinforcing Arsenal’s advantage at a crucial moment. The Gunners have never lost to Chelsea while leading the Premier League, and Sunday’s win continued that trend.

With nine games remaining, Arsenal remain firmly in control of the title race. Next up is a trip to Brighton & Hove Albion in midweek, followed by FA Cup and Champions League fixtures. But for now, the focus is on a Derby victory defined by set-pieces, resilience and a midfielder who answered the challenge with a pinpoint shot.
