LIVERPOOL, England (AP) – Manchester United super-sub Benjamin Sesco scored 13 minutes after taking the field in Monday’s 1-0 Premier League win over Everton.
It was Sesco’s third goal in four games since coming off the bench, securing a point for United.
His goal with 19 minutes left ended the slickest move in an otherwise dull game.
Brian Mbeumo controlled a fine long ball from Matheus Cunha and played a perfectly weighted pass to the feet of Sesco, who coolly manipulated the ball past Jordan Pickford.
The defense was at its best up until then, and the lack of fluency in attack was not helped by a heavy pitch that seemed to slow down both teams.
The result leaves United in fourth place three points behind Chelsea and Liverpool. United were three points ahead of Aston Villa.
It also extended Michael Carrick’s unbeaten run as caretaker manager to six games since replacing Ruben Amorim on 13 January.
The defeat ended Everton’s hopes of qualifying for next year’s European competition, leaving them in ninth place, behind Brentford and Bournemouth, and eight points behind Chelsea and Liverpool.
David Moyes’ side are now winless in seven games at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium.
