MUNICH (AP) – Canada captain Alphonso Davies left Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga win over Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday with a hamstring injury.
The speedy left-back covered his face with his jersey as he left the field early in the second half, raising concerns about the extent of his injury with less than four months left until the World Cup, which his country co-hosts.
Later, the club announced that Davis had suffered a muscle strain in his right hamstring and would be sidelined for the time being.
Davies has been able to leave the field unassisted and Bayern coach Vincent Kompany was initially optimistic about the injury.
“It doesn’t seem that bad,” Kompany said shortly after. Bayern won 3-2. “I don’t know if it’s going to be two weeks or four weeks, but I feel like it won’t be that long. Things like this happen when a player is trying to come back (from an injury). We just have to hope it’s not too bad so he can really work hard again.”
Davies has played in just eight Bundesliga games this season after suffering a serious knee injury while playing for Canada in March, which sidelined him for nearly nine months. Davis suffered injuries to his right knee, including torn ligaments.
Canada will host the World Cup along with the United States and Mexico from June 11th to July 19th.
