MANCHESTER, England (AP) – England manager Thomas Tuchel has signed a contract extension until the 2028 European Championship.
His current contract with the German national team was valid until the end of the World Cup in July. He was appointed in 2024.
The English Football Association announced new contracts on Thursday to avoid distraction ahead of the World Cup.
“This agreement allows the England squad to focus clearly on the pitch at this summer’s World Cup. It also ensures continuity with the top-flight UEFA Nations League fixtures immediately following in September,” the FA said in a statement.
Tuchel managed England’s World Cup qualification to perfection. They won all eight games without conceding a goal.
“It’s no secret that I’ve loved every minute of working with the players and coaches and I can’t wait to take them to the World Cup,” Tuchel said. “This is a great opportunity and I will do everything I can to make this country proud.”
Tuchel is a manager who won back-to-back trophies, winning the Champions League with Chelsea and French and German league titles with Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.
FA CEO Mark Bullingham said: “He was the right man for the job when he joined us for our World Cup campaign and his reputation has further strengthened throughout qualifying.” “We know the players are right behind him and the togetherness within the group is visible to everyone.
“There is no better candidate in world football. With his experience, knowledge and passion for the big game, he gives our team the best chance of success, as we host the once-in-a-generation Euros this summer and in two years’ time.”
England is co-hosting Euro 2028 with the UK and Ireland.
