SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) – The San Jose Earthquakes on Thursday acquired forward Timo Werner from German club Red Bull Leipzig, signing him to a designated player contract through June 2028 in one of the largest acquisitions in MLS club history.
Werner, 29, is pending a visa and International Transfer Certificate before signing a contract, but has enjoyed a glittering career that saw him play for Stuttgart, Chelsea and Tottenham on loan, helping them win trophies in the Champions League, Europa League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup.
He also played 57 international games for Germany, scoring 24 goals.
“Coming to America is always a big decision, but it’s all about success,” Werner said in a statement. “The stadium is beautiful, the facilities are beautiful, and I was really impressed that an experienced manager like Bruce (Arena), who has had so much success in the league, flew here to Germany to discuss this plan with me.”
“Earthquakes fans would expect to get a player who gives his all on the pitch every game. At every club I’ve been at, I’ve always wanted to win trophies. In the end, we’ve always got results. That’s why I want to come to San Jose, to win.”
San Jose acquired Werner’s discovery priority from Red Bull New York for $50,000 in general allocation money.
“I think he’s a great addition to our team,” Arena said. “The addition of a player of Timo’s caliber is great for the club and the community. We believe he will provide us with quality, experience and leadership on the field.”
The Earthquakes will open the MLS season on February 21st against Sporting Kansas City.
