MILAN (AP) — Serie A leaders Inter Milan bounced back from conceding two early goals to beat bottom Pisa 6-2 on Friday and open a six-point lead.
Just when it looked like one of the season’s shocking results could happen at the San Siro, Inter found themselves 2-0 down midway through the first half against a team that had not won in 10 league games.
However, three goals in the seven minutes before half-time turned the game around and gave Inter their ninth win in 10 league games.
Pisa took the lead in the 11th minute thanks to a flash of inspiration from veteran striker Stefano Moreo. A poor pass out by Jan Sommer allowed Moreo to pounce, then he looked up from 35 meters out and smashed the ball over the goalkeeper’s head and into an empty net.
In the 23rd minute, Stefano extended Pisa’s lead to two points with a header from a corner kick.
Inter pulled one back from the penalty spot seven minutes before half-time when Piotr Zielinski scored from Matteo Tramoni’s handling inside the penalty area.
Lautaro Martínez equalized two minutes later, and Francesco Pio Esposito headed in a cross from Alessandro Bastoni for the third goal just before half-time.
Federico Dimarco made it 4-2 with eight minutes remaining, Ange-Youan Bony added a fifth with an individual effort four minutes later, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan rounded it off with a sixth in stoppage time.
Inter were six points behind city rivals AC Milan and nine points behind defending champions Napoli.
The win was particularly welcome for Inter, given that the top four teams will be playing each other this weekend. AC Milan will play fourth-placed Roma on Sunday, while fifth-placed Juventus will face Napoli at home on the same day.
