MUNICH (AP) – Bayern Munich’s 17-year-old breakout star Lennart Karl has been teased by teammates for saying he wants to join Real Madrid one day, coach Vincent Kompany has revealed, praising the young attacking midfielder.
curl He called Madrid his “dream club”. His comments at a Bayern fan event last week drew laughter from the audience and criticism online from some Bayern supporters who questioned his loyalty to the club.
“He probably made a little bit of a miscommunication,” Kompany said Saturday. “For a 17-year-old, I think he’s still focused on the right things. He’s had a very good week in training and I’m watching that aspect closely. He’s done a lot to get minutes.”
Playing for the first time since his comments, Karl scored twice in Tuesday’s 5-0 friendly win against Salzburg.
Kompany said the midfielder had already apologized to the Bayern management and had chosen not to discuss the matter with Karl as “everyone has an opinion” about the youngster.
“I heard his teammates tease him a little bit. It was fun,” Kompany said. “If he trains badly, it’s my fault. If he doesn’t play well or doesn’t play 100 percent, it’s my fault. But he did the opposite. He trained really well, played really well, worked really hard, apologized. It’s still okay for me.”
