trinity rodman rejoins the U.S. women’s team each year for training camp and two games against Paraguay and Chile in January.
Rodman has not been on the U.S. roster since April of last year due to injury. She joins a group of 26 players from the National Women’s Soccer League, as the camp is being held outside of the FIFA competition period and European players are currently in season.
“For Torin to come back into the team now, I think the starting point is the same for everyone,” coach Emma Hayes said Thursday. “I know she’s worked hard in the offseason to continue to develop her resiliency and toughness. And I haven’t talked to her in a few weeks, but we exchanged messages the other day and it was like, ‘I haven’t clicked yes to the flight yet.’ So please book your flight.’ And she said, “Don’t worry, I’ll be there.” So I’m excited about that. ”
Camp at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, home of the LA Galaxy, will conclude on January 24th against Paraguay. The United States will play Chile on January 27th in Santa Barbara, California.
There were some notable omissions from the roster. Gotham FC players, including national team veteran Rose Lovell, were scheduled to compete in the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup, which begins in England later this month. Gotham opens the season on January 28th against Brazilian club Corinthians.
Portland Thorns midfielder Sam Coffey was also removed from the roster. She is reportedly attracting interest from European clubs.
Among the players called up for the first time were North Carolina Courage midfielder Riley Jackson and Seattle Reign’s Sally Menty, as well as Reign forward Maddie Darian and Thorns’ Rylin Turner.
Rodman, a free agent after playing the past five seasons with the Washington Spirit, has played in 47 games with the national team and scored 11 goals, more than any other player on the roster. She also played in one game last year, a 2-0 win over Brazil.
Rodman is at the center of a debate surrounding the NWSL’s salary cap and whether it should be raised to prevent talented players from competing. Transfer to a team with deep pockets overseas.
According to a letter of complaint filed by the players’ association, the Spirit and Rodman signed a multi-year contract to keep her on the team, but the NWSL canceled the contract for not following the spirit of its rules. The complaint has not been resolved.

One of the criteria for an impact player was playing time with the U.S. national team. Hayes said he had not been consulted, but said he understood the standards were still under consideration. She said it won’t affect her coaching.
