MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Matheus Cunha saved Manchester United a point in the 1-1 draw at Leeds. premier league on sunday.
US international Brenden Aaronson put Leeds ahead in the second half at Elland Road, before the Brazilian forward equalized for United.
Aaronson took the lead in the 62nd minute, but Cunha tied it three minutes later. Cunha almost scored the winning goal late in the game when he curled a shot from outside the box that hit the outside of the post.
United have lost just two of their last 14 league games but have drawn six times in that period, with Ruben Amorim’s side struggling to keep pace with the top three teams in the table.
“I think we controlled the game more this year than last year,” Amorim told TNT Sports. “It was a good match, but of course I didn’t win, so I’m a little disappointed.”
Leeds, unbeaten in seven games, took the lead when Aaronson fired a low shot past United defender Aiden Haven and into the far corner.
Cunha received a pass from substitute Joshua Zirkzee and curled his shot past Leeds goalkeeper Lucas Perry to score his third goal in his last five games.
United have had to deal with injuries to their inspirational captain Bruno Fernandes and key forwards Brian Mbeumo and Amad Diallo, who are playing in the African Cup of Nations, during the festival period. Mason Mount and Koby Mainu are also out with injuries.
However, Amorim suggested that Fernandes and Mount’s return could be imminent.
