TANGIER, Morocco (AP) — Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly will miss his team’s games. africa cup of nations The final 16 games after being sent off in his 100th appearance as a team.
Koulibaly, 34, who led Senegal to victory in the 2021 tournament, was sent off in the 71st minute of Tuesday’s Group D match against Benin in Tangier.
Koulibaly was initially shown a yellow card for a foul on Aiyegun Tocin, who stomped on the back of the Benin forward’s ankle with his boot, but this was upgraded to a red card after a VAR review.
His absence didn’t make much of a difference as Cherif Ndiaye sealed the win with a stoppage-time penalty as Senegal progressed through Group D and secured their place for Saturday’s first final against the third-placed teams from Groups B, E and F in Tangier.
