RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazilian club Botafogo fired the son of Brazilian national team manager Carlo Ancelotti on Wednesday, just five months after signing him as manager in his first full-time coaching job.
Davide Ancelotti, 36, was released after Botafogo were unable to defend their Copa Libertadores and Brazilian league titles.
The Rio de Janeiro club finished sixth in the Brazilian league, 16 points behind champions Flamengo, and were eliminated in the round of 16 of the latest Copa Libertadores by Ecuador’s Liga de Quito.
Botafogo said in a statement that the decision was made after a meeting earlier in the day. A successor was not announced.
Davide Ancelotti joined the club after Botafogo owner John Texter sacked Renato Paiva following the team’s round of 16 exit at the Club World Cup in July.
The Italian played alongside his father in various roles at Bayern Munich, Napoli, Everton and Real Madrid for more than a decade. He is also part of Ancelotti’s staff in Brazil.
