CARY, N.C. (AP) — Harrison Bertos scores at 1:54 of overtime. Washington jumped out to a two-goal lead in the second half and the Huskies defeated North Carolina State 3-2 to win the Men’s College Cup on Monday night at First Horizon Stadium.
It was the first national championship for unseeded Washington (16-6-2), which became the first team under coach Jamie Clark to win six road matches in the tournament, defeating six seeded teams along the way. The Huskies won their second trip to the Finals after losing 2-0 to Clemson in 2021.
No. 15 seed North Carolina State (16-3-4) is making it to the finals for the first time under coach Mark Hubbard. The Wolfpack was seeking the school’s first national championship since Jim Valvano led the men’s basketball team to the championship in 1983.
Zack Ramsey scores without an assist Washington entered halftime with a 1-0 lead with 1:12 left in the first half. It was the second time this season that NC State trailed at halftime.
Ramsey scored into an empty net after Wolfpack goaltender Logan Erb was unable to contain the ball at the top of the box. This was Ramsey’s second goal of the tournament.
In the 62nd minute, Richie Ammann sent a cross into the center of the goal, which Joe Dale tucked in for a 2-0 lead.
Dovan Filip scored in the 66th with an assist from Nikola Markovic for his fourth goal of the tournament to make it 2-1. The Wolfpack improved to 11-0-1 when Phillippe scored.
Tyg Healy scored the tying goal with 3:28 left on assists from Justin McLean and Calem Tomey.
Egor Akhlov provided the assist for Beltos’ winning goal.
Huskies goalie Jadon Bouton, the only remaining member of the 2021 team, made five saves.
Erb saved six shots for North Carolina State, which became the last school to concede a point this season.
The temperature was 28 degrees when the match started between the two teams, who had never played each other before.
