Women’s World Cup champion and Olympic gold medalist Alyssa Neher has re-signed with the Chicago Red Stars until 2026.
The Stars announced Wednesday that the 37-year-old goalie will return for her 10th season with the National Women’s Soccer League club.
Neher retired from Team USA at the end of 2024 after the team won the gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
“I feel like I still have a lot to offer and I look forward to competing with my teammates and continuing to move this organization forward,” Neher said in a statement released by the club. “We made a lot of positive progress to finish last season and we want to build on that.”
Neher is one of only three players remaining in the NWSL from the league’s first season in 2013, and the only goaltender in the group. Before joining the Stars, he played for the Boston Breakers.
In August, she became the third goaltender in NWSL history to score, scoring in the final minute of stoppage time to lead the Stars to a 3-3 come-from-behind draw with the Seattle Reign.
She is the first NWSL goaltender to record 60 career wins and 45 shutouts with one club.
“Alyssa has had an immeasurable impact on the Stars and our fans, and we look forward to her continuing to lead and set the standard for what it means to be a Chicago star on and off the field,” said Stars General Manager Richard Hughes.
Neher was named the 2024 U.S. Soccer Player of the Year and FIFA Female Goalkeeper of the Year.
She made an important one-handed save in stoppage time. This was to preserve the United States’ 1-0 victory over Brazil in the Olympic finals in Paris. She had four shutouts throughout the tournament.
In 2024 with the U.S. National Team, he allowed just 11 goals and finished with a record of 13 wins, 1 loss, and 3 draws. In her career, she made 115 appearances for the national team and kept 69 clean sheets.
She is the only American goalie to have shutout victories in both the World Cup and Olympic finals.
