MILAN (AP) — Roma played with 10 men for most of the game and lost 1-0 to Cagliari on Sunday, dropping them in the Serie A title race.
Roma remained in fourth place, one point behind Napoli and AC Milan, with both teams still having games left, and three points behind Serie A leaders Inter Milan. Como won 4-0 Saturday.
Napoli play against Juventus The much-anticipated game will take place later on Sunday when managers Antonio Conte and Luciano Spalletti face their former teams. Milan face Torino on Monday.
It was Cagliari’s first win since September and lifted the Sardinian team four points above the drop zone.
The game took a turn in the 49th minute when Roma defender Zeki Celik brought down Cagliari midfielder Michael Folorunxo just outside the area.
The referee initially awarded a penalty, but after reviewing the incident, realized that the foul was outside the area. He canceled the spot-kick but showed Çelik a straight red card for denying a vital scoring opportunity.
Roma goalkeeper Miles Svillar made a number of great saves, but Cagliari broke the deadlock in the 82nd minute.
Gianluca Gaetano, completely unmarked, chested into the corner and fired the ball inside the far post.
Prior to this, Cremonese defeated Lecce 2-0.
