BERLIN (AP) — Harry Kane scored his 25th goal of the season and converted a penalty for Bayern Munich on Wednesday to lead his team into the German Cup quarterfinals with a 3-2 victory over Union Berlin.
Bayern took the lead through an own goal from Union’s Ilyas Ansah, and Kane headed in Bayern’s second goal from a corner kick in the 23rd minute.
Leopold Queerfeld got his team back into the game with a penalty after a handball from Bayern defender Jonathan Tarr, and then Diogo Leite’s own goal restored Bayern’s two-goal lead.
Kurfeld again scored from the spot after the referee ruled that Kane had used his elbow when diving for the ball. The Austrian defender almost completed his hat-trick with a header just wide of the mark in the final minute.
Bayern advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time since the 2022-23 season. We have never gone beyond that stage since winning the trophy in 2020.
Bayern are unbeaten in 15 matches against Germany this season. The only game Bayern didn’t win was 2-2 draw with Union in the Bundesliga last month.
Bayern midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic limped off with a left foot injury in the 49th minute.
Stuttgart marches
Stuttgart’s German Cup defense advanced to the quarter-finals with a 2-0 win over Bochum after a nightmare for Bochum defender Philipp Strompp.
Stuttgart took the lead in the 12th inning after Stuttgart took a long throw-in and headed it past their own goalkeeper, resulting in Stuttgart being sent off just before halftime. He lost the ball to Deniz Undav and committed a foul on Undav when the Stuttgart striker should have been aiming for goal.
Immediately after the break, Unduff doubled Stuttgart’s lead with a header, and the team went on to win against second-tier Bochum.
Freiburg defeated second division Darmstadt 2-0 thanks to Vincenzo Grifo’s penalty and Lukas Heller’s additional goal. Grifo hit the crossbar with his second penalty late in the match.
Holstein Kiel, who are in the second division, came close to losing in overtime, but overcame the leaders Hamburger SV in a penalty shootout. After a goal from Hamburg’s Bakery Jatta, a 118th-minute goal from Phil Hares kept Kiel in contention.
