MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid failed to return to the top of the Spanish league with a 1-1 loss to relegation-threatened Girona on Sunday.
Azzedine Unahi put the hosts ahead in the 45th minute at the Montilivi Stadium, before Kylian Mbappé converted a penalty in the 67th minute.
Mbappé, who He scored four goals against Olympiakos in midweek. Madrid came close to winning the Champions League when his right-footed shot from near the penalty spot went just wide in stoppage time.
Madrid complained that they should have been awarded a penalty in the 80th minute after a challenge on Rodrygo.
It was Madrid’s third consecutive draw in the league, but they surrendered their lead on Saturday. Barcelona beat Alaves 3-1. After 14 games, Barcelona is one point behind Madrid.
Girona, in 18th place, have won just one of their last six league games.
Villarreal won in the final stages
Third-place Villarreal defeated Real Sociedad 3-2, extending their league winning streak to five games, with Alberto Moreiro scoring in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time.
Villarreal led 2-0, but the hosts fought back with goals in the 60th and 87th minutes.
Moreiro scored the winning goal in stoppage time with a shot from deep in front of the area.
Villarreal are one point behind Madrid and one point behind fourth-placed Atletico Madrid, who beat bottom-placed Oviedo 2-0 on Saturday.
Sociedad, who remained in ninth place, had won three of their last four games.
Trouble at the Seville derby
In the Sevilla derby, Real Betis defeated Sevilla 2-0 with second-half goals from Pablo Fornals and Sergi Altimira.
With this victory, Betis moved up to fifth place. Sevilla remain in 13th place after losing five of their last six league games.
The match was stopped for more than 15 minutes and the players were sent to the locker room due to objects being thrown onto the field by Sevilla fans behind the goal.
Also on Sunday, 6th place Espanyol faced 12th place Celta Vigo, winning 1-0 with Quique García scoring the winning goal in the 86th minute.
