DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Portugal beat Austria 1-0 on Thursday to win the FIFA U-17 World Cup title in the final of a 48-nation tournament in which European teams took the top three spots.
Benfica forward Anisio Cabral barely stayed onside, received a pass past the goalmouth, and fired into the empty net in the 32nd minute.
This was Cabral’s seventh goal of the tournament, one fewer than Austria’s Johannes Moser, who won the Golden Ball.
It was Portugal’s first Under-17 title and came in the 20th edition of the event, which FIFA has expanded to now hold annually rather than every other year.
Qatar is the host location this time and will continue to host the event for the next four years.
In the third-place match played earlier in Doha, Italy drew 0-0 before defeating Brazil 4-2 on penalties, with goalkeeper Alessandro Longoni saving two penalties.
