Piraeus, Greece (AP) – Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé scored four goals for the first time in his career on Wednesday in a Champions League match. Second fastest hat-trick in tournament history.
Mbappe scored three goals in just under seven minutes in Real Madrid’s 4-3 win at Olympiakos.
“I’m very happy to score a goal. It’s always nice for me,” Mbappe said. “My teammates always give me good balls. I’m lucky to play in this team that has so much quality.”
After Chiquinho put Olympiacos ahead in the eighth, Mbappé completed his hat-trick in the 22nd, 24th and 29th minutes. The France international added his fourth goal in the 60th minute after Mehdi Taremi scored for the home side in the 52nd minute. Ayub El Kaabi scored Olympiakos’ third goal in the 81st minute.
Mohamed Salah’s hat-trick for Liverpool while at Rangers in 2022 broke the record for fastest goalscorer in the Champions League. According to UEFA. The Egyptian forward took 6 minutes and 12 seconds to score after entering the match seven minutes before the opening strike.
This was Mbappé’s fifth hat-trick in the Champions League and his second of the season. He had scored three goals in the second league match against Kairat. Two of his hat-tricks came with Paris Saint-Germain.
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have each scored eight hat-tricks in the Champions League, while Robert Lewandowski has scored six hat-tricks.
Mbappe is the top scorer in the Champions League this season with nine goals, three ahead of Galatasaray’s Victor Osimhen.
Mbappé’s goal ended Madrid’s three-game winless streak in all competitions and lifted the Spanish powerhouse to fifth place in the league stage standings of the Champions League.
“It was important to win again,” Mbappe said. “Being winless in three games is big for us. We had to win to stay in the top eight. That’s our goal now.”
