LIMASOL, Cyprus (AP) – On Wednesday, 38-year-old David Luiz scored his first Champions League goal in more than eight years.
The Brazilian defender, who played for Paphos and still sports his trademark curly hair, soared in a corner and fired a powerful header into the top corner of Monaco’s goal. They tied the score at 1-1 in the 18th minute.
He last scored in this competition in October 2017, in his second season with Chelsea, in a 3-3 draw with Roma at Stamford Bridge.
He was a key player in the Chelsea team that won the Champions League title in 2012, and then went on to play for Paris Saint-Germain. His Champions League debut took place in 2007 with Benfica.
David Luiz returned to Europe in August after four seasons in Brazil and will make his major tournament debut with Cypriot champions Paphos.
