OSLO (AP) – Former World Cup and Champions League coach Auge Hareide is undergoing treatment for a brain tumor.
Hareide’s son Bendik told Norwegian broadcaster NRK on Monday that his 72-year-old father was undergoing radiation and chemotherapy but was able to travel to Milan last week to watch Norway qualify for the World Cup. Norway defeated Italy 4-1 at San Siro.
Hareide played 50 games for Norway as a central defender, but never appeared in a major competition. He spent three seasons in England’s top division with Manchester City and then Norwich.
As a coach, he led the Norwegian national team for five years until 2008, but they did not qualify for the final tournament until he took Denmark to the 2018 World Cup. advanced to the round of 16. He started coaching Iceland in 2023, but retired a year ago.
Halide coached Malmo to the Champions League in the 2014-15 season, which was the last time the Swedish side reached the competition’s main stage.
He won domestic league titles in Norway, Denmark and Sweden with Rosenborg, Brøndby, Helsingborg and Malmö.
Bendik Hareide said his father noticed symptoms of the disease in July, including difficulty speaking.
