Manchester City star criticized by fans for costly mistake in defeat against Newcastle

Manchester City entered St James’ Park hoping to shake off a rhythm-destroying international break and close the gap on league leaders Arsenal. Instead, they found themselves locked in tense interactions, creating a frustrating evening atmosphere. City spent a long time moving the ball patiently as always, but something felt a little off, as if the gears were clicking a fraction too slowly.

Newcastle felt vulnerable while playing in front of an enthusiastic home crowd. They pushed forward as far as possible, testing City’s last line and forcing rash decisions. By half-time, neither team was creating opportunities and it felt like a game-changing goal was still within reach.

That corner came quickly when the second half kicked into gear. Harvey Barnes put Newcastle ahead just after the hour mark, but Ruben Dias equalized minutes later. City had barely settled down before Barnes scored again, restoring Newcastle’s lead and increasing the pressure on Guardiola’s side.

Tense matches, chances, interesting matches. In the end they scored two goals. We had one too. Overall it was a very good performance. we had a chance. Unfortunately, I couldn’t finish the second half.

Fan reaction goes to Phil Foden

After the final whistle, the conversation quickly moved online. Many City supporters focused on Phil Foden, claiming that his lack of determination and sharpness cost the team at key moments. Some fans have even suggested that manager Josep Guardiola should consider leaving him out for future matches, adding to an already heated debate over the balance of City’s midfield.

Guardiola chose a more measured tone when speaking to NBC Sports. He praised his team’s efforts, saying the game was intense and full of chances, but admitted City fell short in crucial contests. The manager also acknowledged Newcastle’s strong pressing and said his players struggled to capitalize on their best efforts.

Rben Dias echoed similar sentiments. He highlighted the number of chances City had created, but also pointed to obvious problems. That means Newcastle scored and City didn’t. He also mentioned the challenges of playing away immediately after the international break, something experienced Premier League teams are familiar with.

Looking at the table, this loss really carries weight. Arsenal have a four-goal lead and are still in the game. For City, the pressure is on with every missed chance, especially with Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League followed by a tricky fixture against Leeds in the Premier League.

It was difficult in every sense for both teams. It was a very heated match. I think we had a lot of chances, but in the end we couldn’t score. We have to do better. And they scored on two chances. We have to be better. You come away to Newcastle. Everyone knows how strong we are at home. It is also the first match after the international break. It’s always difficult

If the reaction from fans is any indication, there will be even more attention paid to Phil Foden in the coming weeks. Whether that motivates him or complicates Guardiola’s plans is a storyline worth watching.
