Arne Slott accepts responsibility as Liverpool lose 8 of 11 games

Liverpool’s Premier League title defense is in jeopardy following a humiliating 3-0 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest, with manager Arne Slott taking full responsibility for the club’s collapse.

The defeat was Liverpool’s eighth in their last 11 games, leaving the champions in the bottom half of the table and well below expectations earlier in the season.

Fantastic clay figures of MLS superstars Thomas Muller and Son Heung-min

Sean Dyche’s Forest recorded one of their most impressive victories under the former Everton manager, with goals from Murillo, Nicolo Savona and Morgan Gibbs-White. The game highlighted Liverpool’s continued struggles, with missed chances and defensive lapses proving costly.

Forest’s opening goal was particularly controversial, with winger Dan Ndoye standing in the line of sight of goalkeeper Alisson, echoing Virgil van Dijk’s similar canceled goal at Manchester City two weeks earlier.

Despite the severity of the defeat, Slott refused to shift blame to authorities or external factors. “If we lose 3-0 at home to Forest, no one wants to hear me talk about refereeing decisions now. You have to look at yourself and the team first,” he said.

He stressed that he is responsible regardless of the outcome, saying, “I am responsible when I am winning, but I am also responsible when we are losing. That is not enough, and the responsibility lies with me.”

Slott also highlighted the team’s challenges in front of goal. Liverpool frequently dominated the ball and created chances, but they repeatedly failed to make decisions and were vulnerable to counter-attacks.

“You almost always miss chances and miss chances, but it doesn’t last all season. But you need that energy in the moment when you score a goal,” he added. Slott said scoring the opening goal might have turned the tide, but instead Forest regained their confidence, which made Liverpool’s struggles even worse.

Slot’s self-reflection under mounting pressure

Slott acknowledged the dedication of both players and fans, saying everyone “kept trying until the end.” However, he admitted that effort alone will not be enough to reverse the team’s fortunes.

Tactical adjustments have yet to yield results and Liverpool’s performances continue to fall short of expectations, with a negative goal difference reflecting difficulties at both ends of the pitch.

Meanwhile, Dyche praised his team’s work ethic and adherence to the basics, saying: “The difficult yards, the ugly side of the game… it’s great. We combined it tactically and the credit for that goes to the players.” The victory not only gave Forest confidence, but also highlighted the growing challenge facing Liverpool under Slott.

As scrutiny increases, Slott remains determined to accept responsibility while seeking solutions. His candid comments highlight the seriousness of the situation for Liverpool. Liverpool now need to rebuild their team and rediscover their form if they are to salvage their season and lift themselves out of the mire of mid-table Premier League football.
